Slowing global sales spark layoffs in 2024

As sales of some gas-powered and fully electric vehicles slowed more than anticipated in 2024, automakers moved quickly to scale back production to better match market demand, leading to industry-wide job cuts.

These workforce reductions have hit EV producers, technology startups, as well as established OEMs.

The layoffs touched every facet of automakers’ operations throughout the year. Hourly assembly line workers represented by the United Auto Workers lost jobs alongside executives and other salaried employees.
